Rebel Eurotunnel shareholders have launched an assault on the Channel Tunnel group’s chairman, alleging he is trying to “bludgeon” them out of existence.
Members of the Eurotunnel Foundation Shareholders’ Action Group (Etag) claim in a letter to The Times tomorrow that Jacques Gounon is unfairly trying to strip some 12,000 small shareholders of privileges that include unlimited £1-a-trip travel through the tunnel.
The fresh assault from the group, whose members include Lady Fretwell, wife of Sir John Fretwell, former ambassador to Paris, and Susan Selby, daughter of former Eurotunnel chairman, the late Lord Pennock, comes after Mr Gounon this week branded as “crazy” moves by small shareholders to oppose the group’s resurrection.
Eurotunnel is seeking the support of shareholders to push through a debt-for-equity swap that will wipe out a large portion of its crippling debt mountain.
The transport group claims that one consequence of the plan, which must be agreed by May 15, is that all shareholders must be treated equally. Eurotunnel has opted to offer the most recent perks package to all shareholders, limiting them to 30 per cent off three return trips per year.
Etag's letter claimed: "The foundation shareholders are the most loyal shareholder group...Mr Gounon has now decided to try to use the terms of the takeover offer to bludgeon a group of minority shareholders out of existence.”
Earlier this week Mr Gounon told The Times: “If the exchange offer is unsuccessful... we are dead. If the company is bankrupt on May 16, they will lose both their shares and their privilege.”
Etag is threatening legal action against Eurotunnel and has already sent a letter to the group to register its intent.
“If these actions have any negative impact on the result of the exchange offer, Mr Gounon only has himself to blame,” the shareholders add.

I only bought the tunnel shares for the free trips to 2044.The reorganisers could have continued this perk for the 4000 odd remaining foundation shareholders but as we are all english and the reorganisation was driven in France by french shareholders who thought their government would bail them out, there was no motivation to look after our interests.Stuff them, I am keeping my shares and hope they go bust.
Dr Peter J Lewis, london,
Nothing new here. How many share holders in earlier private railway schemes ever earned any income or received any perks? I'm sure any living share-holders of the Great Central Railway, M & GN, Midland & South Western to name just a few would know the feeling well!
Although I believe the Channel Tunnel is a great asset, only governments can really fund these schemes in the national interest.
Gerald Spencer, Andover, Hampshire
My shares cost me £5,250, and the investment was made for the travel privileges, and possibly some capital gain. The current value of my shares is approximately £400.00 after brokerage charges.
Mr Gounon had better wake up to the fact that most shareholders have probably mentally written off their shares, and therefore only expect to get a return via the perk of the travel privileges.
Mr Gounon is noted for not blinking and neither do I blink. If there is no unlimited travel privileges, I am prepared to go for "broke",

Being a francophile I invested £5000 in the 1987 tender and followed up with supporting investment in the1990 tender.
I believed this to be one of the most important structures of the century and one I would use personally.
The channel tunnel is the rock (forgive the pun) upon which a vast array of superstructure is based- the rail links-British and French, Lille and Ashford regeneration and more recently the Kings Cross and St. Pancras development - all running into millions of investment.
None of this would have happened without the tunnel.
The Governments UK & French pour money into the railways but have not lifted pen or purse to support the tunnel or those of us who made it possible.
G Hayes-Newington, Halesworth,
After considering the risk. I orignally invested £5000. 00
only because of he inducement of "free travel for life
I would expect considerable financial compensation if
these prvileges were withdrawn.
Mr Gougons attitude is disgraceful
