Apple's battery recall extends to users who bought laptop computers as long ago as October 2003 and as recently as this month.
The batteries were supplied with computers and also sold separately.
The company said the recall applies to batteries sold worldwide with its 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4 laptop computers.
Those with a 12-inch iBook G4 laptop are affected if their battery model number is A1061 with a serial number starting ZZ338-ZZ427, 3K429-3K611, 6C519-6C552.
Batteries used in 12-inch PowerBook G4 laptops should be returned if the battery model number is A1079 with a serial number beginning ZZ411-ZZ427 or 3K428-3K611
Those with a 15-inch PowerBook G4 laptop are affected if the batter model number is A1078 or A1148 with a serial number starting 3K425-3K601, 6N530-6N551, or 6N601.
The battery serial numbers are printed in black or dark grey lettering underneath a barcode.
Users who took part in a previous battery recall for any of the above computers or who recently bought or received an extra battery for Apple's iBook G3 should also check their battery to see if it is included in the above ranges.
Customers with one of the batteries affected by the recall will receive a free replacement.
The recall is being conducted online. Users with an affected battery should log their details here.
Apple will send out a replacement battery and details of how to send back your current battery. The replacement battery should take between 4 weeks and 6 weeks to arrive.
