Sony Ericsson today launched a motion-sensing mobile phone that is designed to allow owners to play games on the device by flicking a wrist or swinging an arm.
The F305 phone is intended to capitalise on the popularity of the Nintendo Wii, which uses similar technology, and create a gadget that is aimed at computer games fans.
Due out in the third quarter of the year at a price to be determined, the F305 has three built-in games - Bowling, Bass Fishing and Jockey. All will use the motion-sensing feature, allowing gamers to roll a bowling ball or cast a fishing line. More games will be made available to download online.
Sony Ericsson, a joint venture between the Japanese electronics group and Swedish telecoms manufacturer, has been trying to introduce phones with new add-ons in an effort to win consumers. It reintroduced the Walkman brand as a phone in an attempt to make headway against Apple's succesful iPod.
However, the company's focus on high-end devices has cost it as consumers have switched to cheaper models. This year Sony Ericsson slipped behind LG into fifth place in a league table of mobile manufacturers, and first-quarter earnings nearly halved to €133 million (£105 million).
"Gaming is no longer something you do on your own. It's about having fun with your friends and interacting with the game", said Sven Totté, head of product marketing at Sony Ericsson. "We have used motion-sensor technology before in our phones and integrating it into game play is a natural progression."
The handset also features stereo speakers, dedicated games controls, and has a battery intended to support eight hours of game play, according to its manufacturer. A back-up power pack will also be made available - in case games addicts run down the charge by bowling balls incessantly on the Underground.
