Microsoft’s Halo 3 has become the fastest-selling computer game yet, generating global sales of $300 million (£147 million) in its first week.
The record figures make the title one of the bestselling entertainment properties of all time and confirm how video games now rival the money-spinning prowess of Hollywood blockbusters and publishing phenomena such as Harry Potter.
Halo 3, released for Microsoft’s Xbox console on September 25, generated sales of more than $170 million in its first 24 hours and is estimated to have cost between $20 million and $30 million to develop and another $10 million to market.
By contrast, Sony’s Spider-Man 3, which cost about £250 million to produce and market, grossed $151 million on its opening weekend.
Halo 3’s strong start will also give a welcome boost to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console, which is trailing the market leader, Nintendo’s Wii, by a large margin.
Microsoft said indications from retailers suggested that Xbox daily sales have doubled since Halo 3 was released.
Piers Harding-Rolls, of Screen Digest, the research firm, suggested that Halo 3 has the potential to remain to be “a system seller” for Microsoft in the run-up to Christmas.
He said: “Halo 3 is the jewel in the Xbox crown.”
Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder and chairman, said: "Halo is truly a cultural phenomenon, and the launch of Halo 3 is an important milestone for Xbox 360 and for video games as entertainment and as an art form.”
Halo 3 follows the continued adventures of a space marine called Master Chief, as he fights an alien army called the Covenant.
The long-awaited title won rave reviews across the board last month.
"Sites around the web agree," Crunchgear.com said. "Halo 3 is indeed better than when your wife got pregnant."
Gamepro.com added: “No other game has had as much hype, built-up fan anticipation nor the marketing push — try $10 million in marketing campaigns alone — as the last chapter of the premiere franchise in console gaming.”

Half-Life 2 is just as linear as the Halo series. The only difference is that in Half-Life 2, you have to solve a number of time-consuming, sometimes frustrating, (in my opinion, pointless) puzzles along the way. When playing a shooting game, I don't want to have to pile bricks on top of a board to advance to the next area. I want to kill something. The Halo series provides a purely action-packed adventure, that also incorporates a solid multiplayer experience. If I wanted to solve puzzles, i would play Portal (comes with Half-Life 2 in The Orange Box) (which I have. excellent game.).
$300 million does not lie.

Anyone with a reasonable gaming knowledge knows that unfortunately the Halo series has been dogged by it linear gameplay. This factor still hasn't deterred millions buying it and well done to Microsoft/Bungie for executing a great marketing campaign but if you want a gaming experience not just a quick hit - Half-Life 2 is topped by none.

I find it interesting that both Christian Fundamental churches and Al Queda are using Halo 3 for recruitment and training purposes.

To find the previous record setting game, you have look back a couple years to Halo 2. PC games, such as WoW, are constantly having to refresh content with expansions, charge a fee each month for access, and are more likey to suffer problems with cheaters. What comes in the console game package is what you get. The replay value of Halo is such that expansions are not neccessary. The experience is different every time you connect to Live. I wonder if the WoW fanboys realize what they are missingg.....

World of Warcraft?? LMAO! A Nerdier game has never been made! I can't believe that WOW nerds could even manage to drag themselves away from the computer long enough to post on a blog LOL.
Haligonian, Halifax,
halo 3 is the best thing since sliced bread. World of warcraft/any other game is a steaming pile of crap compared to Halo 3. Good work Bungie!

WOW! Terrance Halo3 did 300 million in one week. ONE WEEK! How much dod WOW do in it's first week? Why don't you tell us. My bet is that it is not even close to 50 million. Halo 3 had a hell of a launch and they deserve credit for doing so. If you are that jealous maybe you shouldn't read these fact stating articles.

These claims are truly propaganda. The fastest selling, with x, y and z caveats!
Chris Kruger, London, UK
The amount of people working for WoW itself creates a large deficiency on their income. Halo 3 also caused a large amount of gamers to buy the 360, and buy xbox live, also a monthly subscription[much cheaper, however, but still]. The difference in what these games are also creates a space, i mean.. you have an mmoRPG computer game. And mmoFPS console game. In its category, halo 3 has surpassed and killed records. As WoW did with the pc. The hype up for Halo 3 also had the support of halo 1, though not as hype as from the players of halo 2, the already largest online-console game community.
Ryan, Hotowne,
acually halo 3 is the best game ever made in the whole entire world and is better than any asian game ever made, bungie great!!!!!! job.

I'm sorry, but how are you completely forgetting World Of Warcraft? It has over 6 million subscribers who pay around $17 USD per month, which translates to $102 million per month. PER MONTH. Not to mention the expansion sold at $50 per person as well.
I don't get these radical claims of Halo 3 being some monster seller when World Of Warcraft has been exceeding these values for some time.
