Douglas Hayward, a Mayfair tailor renowned for dressing some of the world’s most famous men, has filed for administration, just over a year since its eponymous founder died.
Hayward was one of the first tailors to set up off Savile Row, though his atelier, located on Mount Street in Mayfair, quickly became a favourite of 1960s icons Sir Roger Moore and Sir Michael Caine.
On hearing of the company’s collapse, Moore, who wore Hayward’s suits in seven Bond films, told The Sunday Times: “I’m terribly saddened to hear the news. Doug was among the five best tailors in London — though I’ve no idea who the other four were. For me, he was the one and only tailor.
“Thankfully his legacy has continued since his death, with his cutters and back room boys still working the way Doug did and still making the very best suits. You can always spot a Hayward. I miss Doug dreadfully, and only hope that his legacy will continue with a new owner of the shop.”
Kingston Smith & Partners, the administrator, hopes to find a buyer in the next few weeks. The tailor, which turned over about £650,000 last year, is understood to have run out of money.
The new owner will take over an unrivalled order book. As well as Moore and Caine, the tailor counts Sir Jackie Stewart, the former racing driver, Ralph Lauren, the American fashion designer, and the singer Tony Bennett among its clients.
