FURNITURE retailer Land of Leather has called in KPMG, the accountant, to advise on the renegotiation of bank facilities before its year-end in July.
The struggling sofa chain is under pressure from a sharp downturn in trading and increased costs. The company said it had £16.3m of cash balances in March but as trading deteriorated was under pressure to come to a new arrangement with its bank. It has a revolving credit facility of £5m (reduced from £7m last year) a £1m overdraft facility and it owes £53m to suppliers and other creditors.
There was hope the bank holiday weekend would help put the company’s finances in better shape, but bad weather combined with low consumer confidence made for a disappointing performance.
Last weekend’s rain was the latest blow to the retailer’s share price. It closed at 20p on Friday, having declined from a high of 355p at the start of 2007, and from 124p at the beginning of this year. A profit warning in January led to a halving of the share price, which has fallen steadily since.
At the end of March Land of Leather’s interim pretax profits fell from £8.4m to £5.5m and it cut its dividend. House broker Investec recently slashed its proft forecast by £1m to £4.5m.
The company took another blow in April when it emerged that Sleep Depot, a bed retailer with over 70 concessions within Land of Leather shops, had gone into administration. The loss of Sleep Depot rent will cost the chain £1.6m this year.

i don't believe this company will go under. Just by looking at the figures would seem that this company has plenty of cash in reserve to survive this downturn. Pound for pound in this sector this is one of the strong ones!
Matt, Swindon,
I can't see this company surviving beyond this month. In the current climate, banks are surely not going to be lenient. There were two Bank Holiday weekends in May - neither of which appears to have generated the kind of boost that Land Of Leather desperately needed.
Barry Kellow, Llandeilo, UK
Most furniture sales organisations don't own a single chair, sofa or bed. They are just fronts for 'order taking'. Display stock belongs to the manufacturers. All smoke & mirrors - as they say. No real foundation for long term survival. Use your credit card to get purchase protection.!
J Fisher, Edinburgh, Midlothian
Good ridance to them. I came to them with a robust financial solution about 18 months ago which they ignored.
Oliver, Wilson,
I bet they are still taking deposits without telling the customers they are in trouble. We have seen it before in previous economic slumps. The customer pays, then has to rely on the administrators to get their money back. It is scandalous this practice is allowed in the 21st Century.
Steve, Poole, UK
Make sure if you intend to buy anything from Land of Leather to only ever pay by credit card at least you can claim it back from your credit card issuer if they should go bust.
In fact if you wanted to buy anything tell them you will only pay cash on delivery then you get a chance to check them out
Richard Appleby, Wirral, England
it does help when they promise you goods and don't deliver ,i was told 4 weeks for my suite and eventually it came after 13 weeks, and it was faulty, they need to get their act together and give customers what they promise,
donna, halesowen,
Could problem be caused by the 'spraying of a substance' on their so called leather suites that has been making people sick. Is this a way of not paying compensation to those who were made ill.
victor arram, westcliff,
They may be seeking funds but where are the funds going to come from?I carn't see many people splashing out on new furniture next year.
