Fresh fears over the health of Tesco's fledgeling business in the US have emerged amid claims that suppliers are “disenchanted” and had no idea that the supermarket giant was going to call a three-month halt to its expansion drive.
Jim Prevor, one of the most influential commentators on the supermarket sector in the US, added that Tesco's Fresh & Easy chain needed a major strategic overhaul if it was ever going to be a hit with American shoppers.
He told The Times: “They are doing horribly. There's no question they have made some mistakes and they are still making them.”
Tesco revealed last week that, after opening 59 Fresh & Easy stores across Southern California and Arizona in five months, it was going to “pause for breath” until July.
The move followed claims from analysts that stores were missing targets by up to 70 per cent. Tesco insists that its review of the format - based on the Tesco Express convenience chain - was pre-planned, but Mr Prevor said he had spoken to suppliers who had no idea the decision was coming.
He said: “This pause was a wise decision. The more stores Tesco opens here, the more money the company loses. But it was certainly not pre-meditated, or planned. We have spoken to several dozen suppliers who have been working hand in hand with Tesco for over a year since the project began.
“Every one of them has told us that at no point in time did Tesco ever say ‘Hey don't forget, we're going to open 60 stores then take a time-out for three months'. The whole supplier community is dumbfounded. Many are becoming disenchanted and some are deciding to walk away. They don't want to talk about it as they don't want to upset Tesco.”
A spokesman for Tesco refused to comment on the group's relationship with US suppliers. Two large UK suppliers have set up processing plants in California to help to provide Fresh & Easy's fresh food ranges.
The Tesco spokesman said: “In all parts of our business, it is always part of our plan to take the opportunity to step back and review progress. We have been getting lots of positive feedback from customers.”
Tesco spent three years researching the US market before launching Fresh & Easy. It plans to invest £1.25 billion over five years.
Jeff Adams, the chief executive of Tesco's business in Thailand, joined the Fresh & Easy management team last month in a move that fuelled speculation that the chain was struggling.
Analysts believe Tesco will also go back on a pledge to break out separate trading figures for Fresh & Easy in its annual results on April 15.
Mr Prevor said that Fresh & Easy needed to give far more space to popular American brands rather than use its own brand on most products. He added that packaging had to be cut back and more staff should be American.
“Americans are different from Brits and the stores will be more successful if Americans make the decisions,” he said. “Besides, Tesco could use the British team back in the UK.”

a new store opened up in alhambra. its great. a great idea often entails changing consumer habits. With so many people unwilling to cook (or cant cook) fresh and easy will do well. As with ANY new business openings..there is a huge loss when opening. But it will be profitable quite soon.

I go the nearby F&E (Eagle Rock Blvd) once a week for eggs, produce, and a few other things, as long as they are of of comparable quality to Trader Joe's. I normally shop at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, but I enjoy having another option. That article sounds like it was written by a competitor.
Ruby, Los Angeles,
I live in So Cal and cannot believe Tesco could be so stupid as to spend "3 years" researching this market and come up with such a lame format...concept could work if they had any grasp of our market, we are not Brits with small reefers, don't walk to stores, don't go every day...in 3 years they could not figure this out ??? I am dumbfounded...they need to cut and run...hopefully they will get over their pride and do it quickly....missing sales forecasts by "70%"...who the hell were these people who spent 3 years on this project ??? Secret agents for Tesco's competition ????

.......and whilst they are doing this there are taking their eye off the core UK market and being thrashed by Morrisons - time for some Executive heads to roll.

There seems to be just this one guy, who claims to have spoken to a few Tesco suppliers, and he's getting all this print space?

Many Brits. like myself would like to know why Tesco have not opened in Australia. We need the quality, variety, service and prices which Tesco can provide.. They operate in Thailand etc so what is the excuse for not operating where they would be welcome by many?

Isn't Jim Prevor a paid consultant to numerous U.S. fresh food companies, including some who are doing business with Tesco Fresh & Easy?
This doesn't mean his comments aren't valid. But I believe its a fact that if true should be disclosed.
