Raja Daswani, the globetrotting tailor famed for dressing gentry, politicians and businessmen at a fraction of the price of Savile Row, is setting up shop in his native India.
The Hong Kong-based millionaire plans to open two stores - in Delhi and Bombay – to satisfy the demand for bespoke suits and shirts among the corporate community. Mr Daswani, who was born in Bombay, will be in India next month to negotiate potential sites in five-star hotels. He may seek a local partner.
He said: “A lot of Indian businessmen are travelling the world and see our products. India’s expatriate population is also growing fast in banking and technology and they are asking us to come to them.”
Raja Fashions is based in Kowloon, but he and a team of ten tailors spend half the year touring Britain, the United States and Europe measuring up a word-of-mouth clientele in hotel suites. His customers are said to include Tony Blair and Lakshmi Mittal, the Indian-born steel magnate, but Mr Daswani refuses to divulge names.
He is dubbed the Scourge of Savile Row, and his bespoke suits start at £179 and range up to about £1,000. He said that he sells at least 60 suits a month in India, where customers tend to request the more expensive fabrics.
Mr Daswani’s grandfather emigrated from India to Hong Kong in 1957, where he set up a custom tailoring business. His father, uncles and aunts followed suit. After the hand-over of Hong Kong to China in 1997, many of Mr Daswani’s British expatriate customers returned home. He followed them, taking his tailoring business on the road.
