More police trouble in Japan after the Prime Minister, Junichiro Koizumi, saw TV footage of two officers bungling an arrest and nearly letting the suspect drive away in their patrol car. The Asahi Shimbun (Feb 23) quotes Koizumi saying: “What on earth is this? What kind of training are they receiving?” The police have been instructed to investigate the case.
Bad press about the police aired by a Canadian university radio station may be banned, reveals The Toronto Star (Feb 23). The weekly Ryerson University radio show, Bad Cop, No Donut!, reports on negative stories about police and the Toronto police chief, Julian Fantino, wants to see an end to it. “I’m not telling anybody anything that hasn’t been in the newspaper already,” says Ron Anicich, the show’s host, producer and self-described anarchist.
Students across the border in Michigan are unlikely to be accused of anarchy — some are getting paid $100 (£52) in cash for keeping their rooms tidy. Rooms have to be kept clear of anything illegal, offensive or banned in order to be included in open-day tours, Canada.com (Feb 23) reports.
Cash for grubbier activities has riled residents of a Sydney apartment block, writes The Australian (Feb 23), as three brothels take legal action to ensure that they can continue to operate in the block. “If the court rules in favour of brothels operating in residential apartment blocks, one could be on your doorstep tomorrow,” says a councillor.
