Debt worries overshadow EMI's bullish forecasts

EMI, the world’s third-largest music company, gave a confident forecast for the first half yesterday, saying that its recorded music division would lift sales by 4.5 per cent, but the news was tempered by a higher than expected interest bill.

EMI shares fell 1p to 223¼p after analysts expressed concern about the company’s debt, which is estimated at £1.06 billion. “The top-line growth was good but there are some concerns over the net interest and the fact that it continues to increase,” said one analyst, who asked not to be named.

The company said that finance costs were expected to be about £47 million for the half, partly because of higher interest rates.

EMI said its music division was on track for a 4.5 per cent increase in first-half revenues, while music publishing revenues were expected to rise 5.5 per cent. Digital revenues continued to grow, the company said.

Overall profit before tax, amortisation and exceptional items was expected to increase by 9 per cent.
