News Corp buys IGN Entertainment for $650m

IGN, a San Francisco-based maker of games and entertainment websites, will be folded into News Corp’s Fox Interactive Media unit.

Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corp, parent company of Times Online, said: "With the acquisition of IGN and its 28 million unique users, we have gone a long way toward achieving two of our key strategic objectives in our efforts to become a leading and profitable Internet presence."

IGN’s websites include IGN.com, GameSpy and FilePlanet, along with the Vault and Planet networks. Privately held IGN also owns and operates two film-related sites - IGN FilmForce and Rotten Tomatoes - as well as the mens lifestyle site, AskMen.com.

News Corp said the transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2005, subject to regulatory approvals. Mark Jung, chief executive of IGN, will continue in his role following the acquisition.

News Corp is also in the process of closing deals to buy Intermix, the operator of the MySpace.com social-networking site, and college-sports company Scout Media.
