— Chris Moyles, the self-styled “saviour of Radio 1”, was, it turns out, a flatmate of Ashley Tabor a few years ago. Tabor, of course, now runs Global Radio – home to Capital and Heart among other stations. So, does that make Moyles a natural hire then? “No,” says Tabor, slightly implausibly, who insists he hasn’t considered the matter. “I’ve probably given him a pay rise now,” he adds.
— If anyone can buy Chrysalis Music, which publishes songs from OutKast to Blondie, it’s the appropriately named Bug Music. Bug is chasing Chrysalis it emerged this week and, critically, it has the money. Yesterday, it said that it had secured a $200 million (£110 million) credit facility, led by JPMorgan. Los Angeles-based Bug Music counts more than 250,000 copyrights in its repertoire, which includes songs from artists such as Johnny Cash and Iggy Pop.
— Will the private equity consortium come back with a higher offer for Informa, the City is asking. The consortium is still trying to make a deal work by the September 26 deadline, with some banks willing to offer more lending. But with Informa rejecting 450p, will a little more cash persuade shareholders? Investors want 475p, although they may settle for 470p.
— Sales of The Independent are up a few thousand on last week, according to industry estimates. This is despite the cover price rising to £1. But it could be short term. The banking crisis has boosted sales across all papers, and The Indy’s guide to Love & Sex has also been seductive. Sales could ease when the love-in ends.
— The decision by Ed Richards to preannounce key elements of Ofcom’s review of public service broadcasting on Wednesday left TV types surprised. But the regulator also plans to relax ITV’s obligations to provide regional news, which could well prompt a row when the document comes out next week. Ofcom did not want that to overshadow its conclusion that Channel 4 needs urgent financial help.
