The BBC dominated the Sony Radio Academy Awards nominations tonight (Wednesday), receiving all of the nominations for UK Station of the Year.
The BBC’s Radio 2,Radio 4 and Radio Five Live have all been nominated for the prestigious award, last year won by GCap’s Classic FM, further enforcing the dominance of the BBC over the commercial radio sector.
In commercial radio, GCap’s Planet Rock has been nominated for digital radio station of the year despite owner GCap’s recent announcement that it plans to axe the station. Prior to GCap’s agreed takeover by Global Radio, the group said it would exit digital radio in a move which would see the closure or sale of Planet Rock.
Johnny Vaughan, GCap’s breakfast show host on London station Capital 95.8, also received two nominations, for The Breakfast Show Award and The Entertainment Award.
The nominations may prove helpful to Mr Vaughan ahead of the takeover of GCap by Global Radio as the group may want to change some key presenters.
Mr Vaughan will go head-to-head with BBC Radio 1’s Chris Moyles, also nominated for the best breakfast show host.
BBC Radio 1 presenter Zane Lowe scooped up three nominations - for The Music Programme Award, The Specialist Music Programme Award and The Music Radio Personality of the Year.
BBC presenters received all of the nominations for the Speech Broadcaster of the Year and most of the nominations for the news and current affairs, sports programme and speech programme awards.
Nominations for the radio station of the year with one million plus listeners included Manchester’s Key103, Radio City 96.7 and Real Radio Scotland.
