Tempus Comment: Unknown artists

Eric Nicoli is to leave EMI with a £2.8 million payoff as Terra Firma formally takes control of the British music major

Chris Roling, whom nobody has heard of, has been handed the job of trying to turn around EMI.

Brought in by the incoming owner Terra Firma, Mr Roling was formerly a vice-president at ICI, but it is a different set of chemicals that he will have to learn to handle at the music major.

Terra Firma, of course, is making a virtue out of the fact that it has brought in Mr Roling and two other executives with no music experience to help to run the company. There is clearly something in that, but part of any media job is about providing creative leadership that artists will respect. Terra Firma will probably find it needs that, too. After all, it has to handle the inevitable rows about Pete Doherty or whichever of its artists gets into trouble.
