Comment: The shows must go on

The downfall of Chris Albrecht reads like a plot from his biggest hit, The Sopranos. At 3am on Sunday the HBO chief executive was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his date outside the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Last night he resigned “at the request of Time Warner”, the parent company of HBO.

His departure comes at a crucial time for HBO. The Sopranos’ final season ends next month. Mr Albrecht was masterminding replacements for it and other recently ended hits such as Sex and the City.

Time Warner’s TV networks generated revenues of $10.3 billion (£5.2 billion) last year — nearly a quarter of Time Warner’s overall sales.

The blockbusters need to keep flowing if the division's performance is not to emulate, like Mr Albrecht’s career, another HBO hit: Six Feet Under.
