Vietnam in talks with Ladbrokes

LADBROKES is one of three gaming groups that have been approached by the Vietnamese government to help legalise gambling.

Talks are at an early stage, but the Hanoi government is keen to create a lottery-based football betting exchange. If successful, it will go some way to controlling the country’s widespread illegal gaming operations.

Chris Bell, Ladbrokes’ chief executive, confirmed preliminary talks were taking place.

He said: “Our presence in China, where we are acting as consultants on the opening of China’s first pool betting shops, has opened up other opportunities in Asia, including Vietnam where we are in discussions on a new football lottery, which is due to launch next year.”

Ladbrokes has been in talks with the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Committee and its football-governing body. The other two companies that could partner the government are Singapore Pools and SMS, the international data- processing company.

Vietnamese officials have already travelled to China to study its football-lottery system.
