Walt Disney unveiled a 13 per cent drop in its fourth quarter profit and gave warning that its theme-park advance bookings have fallen off as much as 10 per cent.
The group reported a $760 million profit as revenues climbed by 6 per cent to $9.45 billion in the three months to September 27.
However, Robert Iger, the group’s chief executive, said attendance at its domestic parks is down by 1 per cent since, and with a much sharper drop in advance bookings suggesting greater declines to come. Executives later said in a conference call that bookings for the first two quarters of fiscal 2009 are down “a little under 10 per cent”.
Mr Iger said: "Consumer confidence is the lowest we've seen in over three decades, and even the best product out there is feeling the effect.”
Profit in the studio entertainment division, which books movie box-office receipts and sales of DVDs, fell by 42 per cent as revenue declined by 5 per cent, as the unit was hit by fewer movies being released in the U.S.
Meanwhile, profits in the media-network segment, made up of the ABC broadcast network and cable channels, fell by 4 per cent, as revenue rose by 4 per cent.
Profits in the theme parks and resort business fell 4 per cent as sales increased by 7 per cent.
