Sales of electric cars have fallen by more than half this year, according to figures released two days after the Government’s climate change advisory body predicted a huge increase.
Only 156 electric cars were sold from January to October, compared with 374 for the same period last year.
Nice Car Company, one of the two main British distributors of electric cars, went into administration yesterday. Set up in 2006, the company had been selling an all-electric version of the French-made Aixam Mega. It had also planned to bring a range of new models to market by the end of the year. However, sales dropped to fewer than one car a week.
Richard Bremner, editor of www.cleangreencars.co.uk, which specialises in green motoring, said: “While volumes are still tiny, any drop in electric car sales will come as a shock. Buyers could be holding off for cars from mainstream manufacturers, although they may still have years to wait.”
The Committee on Climate Change said on Monday it expected electric and hybrid vehicles to form up to 40 per cent of cars on the road by 2020.
There are about 1,100 all-electric cars currently on British roads — 0.004 per cent of the total. Most are owned by Londoners and are quadricycles, not fully type-approved cars.
Congestion-charge concessions for all-electric vehicles helped to create the market, but drivers have since opted for new small diesel cars with very low carbon emissions.

In Germany, one million EVs using 15kWh/100km and each driving 10.000km per year would only increase the country's total electricity consumption by 0,3%.
It's sad to see so many cluless people babbling about lanthanum and gigawatt power stations instead of getting in touch with reality.
Skarrin, Munich, Germany
40% of cars to be at least partially battery powered by 2020? Ain't going to happen, there just isn't enough production of the necessary lanthanum and other obscure resources. Typical handwaving bureaucrats ignoring practical realities.
Patrick, London,
I suggest you read up on the compressed air car. It's an electric car in that it uses compressed air, but it fulfills all 2nd car requirements, costs $10k, $1.00 a day to run, goes 125 miles at 70 mph between refills, and could be filled in the future at compressor "stations" in 2 min.
victor compton, Cherbourg, France
Battery & fuel-cells? The energy has to come from -somewhere- so your 'battery 'powered' car actually consumes -more- greenhouse gasses (at the coal station!) to run, and the enviro damage from batteries is still enormous! We need more efficient cars, not battery ones (until someone cracks fusion!!)
Matt, London,
I would be glad to buy a car which generated few or zero green house gasses. But as with all such the vehiclive has to deliver distance, performance, style, convenience and cost. In short deliver technology which is a choice for the normal vehicle at same or less cost.
Peter Roberts, Haywards Heath, UK
If we use electric cars, how are we going to generate all the additional electricity we will need? Even small electric cars use 1kWh every 5 miles. You would need perhaps another 100 gigawatt-hours of power generation per day to power every car in the UK. It isn't going to come from windmills.
Frank Upton, Solihull,
Thank all the hybrid and small car owners for helping to keep prices down so you can drive your SUV, and I can drive my Dodge Ram Van and fill up at $1.53.9 per gallon. My next vehicle will be a hybrid. We all need to try to help out by using less energy. I only drive the van 1500 miles per year.

Liberals the death of us? Dont you mean the authoritarian state?
What enivornmentalists need to understand is that the product still needs to be competitive and it is not.
R&D, tax breaks for green technology and pollution tax will help things, but a better product is needed.
Talese Amer, London,
You guys are all pretty much right on. Battery tech just isn't there...the hazmat team arguement is kinda soft for me though (is it really that big of a deal when we have zero emissions cars) The coal plant doesn't seem like a strong arguement against electric cars either. Clean Burning Coal anyone?
Ryan, Chicago,
Liberals and the Green's will be the death of us.. Liberalism is a mental disorder..
Homer, Albany, USA
Want to spend $50,000 plus on an electric car that will take you 100 miles before a 2 hour recharge, that will require a battery replacement every four years at $4,000, that will require the interstate to shutdown requireing a Hazmat Team to clean accidents, and a coal fired plant to charge -go 4 it

For large market electrics, better battery technology is still required. Right now, electrics could dominate only if things are really desperate, because people like performance and quick refueling.
SamP, Everett, Wa, USA
They don't go far enough of a charge. They're pretty much a niche item untill they advance a bit.
Tim, Troutdale Oregon, USA
Make a car that doesn't have to be plugged in every 35 miles. The batteries need to improve before these cars will be viable. I drive 125 miles per day what good would that car be to me.
tom, cape cod, usa
It would be wise to see how sales of gasoline cars have fallen as well. Nobody's spending money right now.
Bill Moore, San Diego, USA
As it is on this side of the Pond, folks only want these cars when gas prices go way up. when those prices recede, like now, gas, diesel, and hy-brid cars are the choice. Green is great to talk about, but hardly anybody wants to actually do it.
