Lighthouse Caledonia, the salmon farming firm which was earlier this year rescued from the brink of collapse by a private equity company, has submitted plans for a new fish farm in the Hebrides and revealed it is on the verge of a £15m acquisition.

The company has put in an application for a site at Broad Bay on the Isle of Lewis to create a 2,000-ton farm, which would have 100 staff. The news comes days after the company announced proposals to build a £5m salmon processing plant at Arnish, south of Stornoway.

Lighthouse also reported a £3.7m profit for its third quarter — up from just £474,000 the previous year.

In December last year, under different owners, Lighthouse was forced to close its Stornoway processing plant with the loss of 130 jobs. The company was later bought up in a £17m deal by private equity firm Northern Link.

Jim Mullins, the chairman, said the company hoped to double in size, and that he was in negotiations over the acquisition of two other companies — one a £15m deal.
