JC Flowers co-ordinates Hypo Real Estate deal

The US private equity firm leads investors in offer to take 24.9 per cent stake in German property investment group

A group of investors led by US private equity firm JC Flowers is offering to acquire a 24.9 per cent stake, worth €1.13 billion, in Hypo Real Estate Group, Germany's second-biggest commercial property lender.

The investors, consisting of JC Flowers, Shinsei Bank and Grove International Partners, are offering €22.50 in cash per share.

Hypo Real Estate said its management board welcomes the offer in principle, which is a 21.8 per cent premium on the company’s last closing price of €18.47.Shares in afternoon trading today were up 24.53 per cent to €23.

JC Flowers said in a statement that the group of investors has a medium-term interest in Hypo Real Estate and wants to offer the management support in regards to future expansion. This includes examining a potential cooperation between Hypo Real Estate and Japanese Shinsei Bank to expand commercial real estate financing activities, it added.

The group of investors are not thought to be interested in upping their stake to more than 24.9 per cent.

MerckFinck analyst Konrad Becker said that it is favourable for Hypo Real Estate’s share price, which declined sharply in the past months, that the group will now get a core investor.
