Caring’s Mayfair move
RICHARD CARING, the billionaire retail entrepreneur who owns the exclusive Wentworth golf club in Surrey and The Ivy restaurant in the West End, is turning his hand to luxury apartments after striking a £250m deal to buy a site in Grosvenor Square next to the US embassy in London.
Caring is understood to have beaten competition from 38 parties, including Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster’s private property company. It is the first time Caring has attempted a significant residential scheme in the UK.
Rover’s return from China
THE Chinese car group that bought the assets of MG Rover two years ago will unveil plans this week for a return to making cars at Longbridge, the Birmingham motor factory.
At a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Nanjing Automobile Corporation (NAC) will fulfil its promise to restart production of the MG TF sports car at Longbridge.
The factory start-up was scheduled for next month, but preproduction models have not met the standard NAC has set. Now the best estimate is for the TF assembly line to be in full operation in the autumn, with the first cars available to customers at the turn of the year.
Debt firms rapped
THE British Bankers’ Association will this week demand that debt-management companies agree to slash upfront fees on insolvency agreements. The hardline approach over individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs) comes as banks become increasingly alarmed at the structure and size of fees and the marketing of products.
Under an IVA, a lender agrees to write off part of an individual’s debts in return for repayments over a set period. Sales of IVAs have risen sharply – doubling last year to 45,000.
But many banks are unhappy about high upfront fees, which can be as large as £5,000, because about 20% of IVAs fail within two years, leaving the banks with unpaid debts.
New crisis at Kwik Save
THE troubled grocery chain Kwik Save is facing a new cash crisis, according to insiders. The company received a £50m rescue package in February. But late last week Arla Foods stopped delivering milk to the grocery chain, citing “payment problems”. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Kwik Save’s bread supplies have also been stopped at a number of stores within the past few days. Kwik Save declared thousands of redundancies in early April. Arla would not comment. Nobody from Kwik Save was available for comment.

I think this is the end for kwik save, over the weekend my store has traded with no milk, bread, lottery, dairy, as well as no ambient stock like cigs and teabags. We are taking 2-3 hundred pounds a day, the tumbleweeds are blowing up the aisles. I don't think the big bosses care or even understand what us staff have been through over this past year, it is embarrassing and upsetting for all staff. Paul niklas sent us an e mail a few weeks back promising honesty about what is going on in the company, he also promised us weekly e mails, we've not seen any more e mails over the past 2 weeks, no area managers visit us, nothing!! There is no hope for it now, they half heartedly promoted "it was back" back in march and 2 months later it's worse than ever, customers have gone for good this time. There are many loyal kwik save workers and we've all been kicked in the teeth and if it folds we'll probably get kicked even more by having to fight for any money owing to us, it's a disgrace!
A. Ward, shropshire,
Nobody from kwiksave was unable to comment? What a suprise.!!!!!!!!!
They dont even bother telling their own staff what is going off. They have treated us terrible over the past few months and we are all sick of worrying and being lied to!
we were told we were going to be kept up to date with the progress of the business, we had no deliverys, bread ,milk, chilled, fruit and veg but are still being 'told everything is ok',clearly we are not ok,
they have alot of loyal staff who work hard and want it to work out, but this seems to be irrelevant to them as they still continue to treat us and their customers like idiots!
over the next few days we are waiting to be told about store closures or a takeover, and we are still being lied to when we approach our bosses and ask them what is happening,
i think kwik save have not tried nearly hard enough to make it work and instead have chose to run the business into the ground and take their loyal staff with them,my 2 year old son could do better
