Nicholas Levene, the bankrupt City financier who fled owing clients at least £200million, has stashed some of his clients’ money in dozens of bank accounts scattered across the world.
Investigators have already uncovered accounts in six countries, as well as a number of tax havens, but believe that Levene has left a “pot of gold” that may prove impossible to find.
Levene, 45, who has already been interviewed under caution by the Serious Fraud Office, has said he is suffering from a gambling addition.
However, investigators have found that he made careful decisions to transfer assets overseas and into the names of family members prior to his bankruptcy earlier this month.
“It will be very hard to get everything,” said one investigator familiar with the case. “In some cases all the money has gone by the time anyone realises there is a problem - this time there is money still there. I’ll be amazed if he hasn’t hidden a pot of gold somewhere.”
Clients paid vast sums directly to Levene in the hope that he would invest their money. He would offer some customers returns of more than 3% a month.
Victims who say they have lost money include Richard Caring, the restaurateur, and Brian Souter and Ann Gloag, the founders of the Stagecoach transport group.
More than 30 creditors have now come forward, together claiming losses of more than £200m.
One former friend of Levene said: “Nick had dozens of clients, I am astonished that only 30 have come forward so far. There have got to be dozens more out there.”
Levene is currently receiving treatment in The Priory, the London clinic with many celebrity clients.
A source close to the Levenes said that five cars, including a Porsche, had been seized in recent days. He has also lost control of three UK homes and a portfolio of properties in Israel worth several million pounds.
Last week Moni Fanan, a former manager of an Israeli basketball team, who encouraged friends and players to invest their money with Levene, was found hanged.
It is understood Fanan committed suicide after racking up debts of £12m, much of it understood to be from investing with Levene.
