Bankers to the end, Lehman staff are trying to sell company memorabilia in the hope of making some money out of the collapse.

Up for grabs on eBay, the internet auction site, is a smart, secondhand “Lehman Brothers messenger bag and notepad”, right.

Beneath the photo of the satchel, which as of last night had received only one bid, for 99 cents, is a bitter comment from the seller: “I worked here for half of my career. Bought most of my stock at a weighted average price of $45. Enough said.

“I guess all you employed people could use this bag to carry important documents and do complex mortgage calculations on the notepad. The only importantish docs I have now are my Lehman stock certificates, which I plan on using to warm my apartment this winter when I can’t afford the heating bill.”

Memorabilia hunters, who probably have similar items from Barings Bank and LTCM stored at home, can also bid for a white Lehman coffee mug that bears the now grim slogan: “Where vision gets built.” The mug’s seller remarks: “Own a piece of history for $39.50.” For the price of the mug, plucky investors could have bought 207 shares of Lehman stock.

Creepily, auction site bidders can also buy a genuine Lehman Brothers stock certificate, issued in 1925 by White Star Line, the owner of the Titanic.
