The survival of Paul Wolfowitz as President of the World Bank was left hanging in the balance last night after he faced an unprecedented and sharp rebuke from the world’s development ministers, who were meeting in Washington.
But despite the censure from ministers on the bank’s policy-setting Development Committee — and a continuing inquiry into his conduct by the bank’s executive board — a defiant Mr Wolfowitz vowed to continue in his post.
The ministers’ effective reprimand came after four days of international haggling over his fate, after his admission that he had orchestrated a large pay rise and guaranteed promotion for his girlfriend, Shaha Riza, a World Bank official, after he became the chief of the institution in 2005.
In a terse statement the ministers said that they “expect the bank to adhere to a high standard of corporate governance”. They continued: “We have to ensure that the Bank can carry out its mandate and maintain its credibility and reputation as well as the motivation of its staff. The current situation is of great concern to all of us. We endorse the board’s actions in looking into this matter and we asked it to complete its work.”
Sources said that the statement, agreed at the urging of European ministers, had the tacit assent of the US. At a lunch among the ministers, other sources said that Mr Wolfowitz had “cut a lonely figure”. However, Mr Wolfowitz said: “This is important work and I intend to continue it. I believe in the mission of this organisation and I believe I can carry it out.”
He noted that he had “had many expressions of support” as well as criticism. He refused to speculate on the board’s findings. “The board is looking at it,” he told reporters. “I am not going to pre-empt it by getting into a discussion here.”

Mr. Wolfowitz should be sued along with the world bank for sexuall harrassment as his behavior contributed to a hostile work environment for all the other bank employees that do not have a "special/sexual relationship" with him. No one else gets that kind of pay raise and agreement that says what the employee evaluation will be before they even go into a job. This is clearlly sexual harrassment based on the fact that he was sexually active with that women. I think that if some bank employees decided to sue for sexual harrassment the bank would be forced to make him quit as this could cost the bank a lot of money, especiaolly if they keep him on.

There used to be a time, when a person has violated a moral certainty in our society , felt obligated to resign and did so. When did we lose moral equilibrium in our world?
I get this awful feeling that Wolfowitz sees himself as George W's "war on Terrorism" general in Europe so would be letting his president if he resigned . What a load of hogwash , this is man who has violated the rules of society and of his job , he MUST resign or be FIRED !!!!

He'll definitely have more expressions of support
- from inside, when he's inside.

In any other organisation it would be seen as corrupt behaviour and he would have to resign or be fired . Simple as that. He has personally tarnished the World Bank's reputation for integrity.
Thanks for that John, thats exactly how I see it,
I think a man such as this has to be fired, he will not go willingly, his ego is in the way.

Wolfowitz may find it difficult manage his business from a prison cell. He's history and just won't admit it.

This man should be fired from his job. What does accountability mean? Where should people look for examples? This unjustifiable gross abuse of power is something that should not be tolerated anywhere - least of all at the World Bank!!!
Don't leaders understand the meaning of "shame"? Are they so insulated from the realities that govern everyone else? Why is the World Bank taking so long to rid itself of this cancer?
