House prices soared and Income Tax rates dived during Margaret Thatcher’s term in office, while the price of a pint increased by 200 per cent, figures showed today.
When Mrs Thatcher first came to power 25 years ago this week the average UK property cost just £19,300, but by the time she resigned in November 1990 the cost of a home had soared by 263 per cent to £70,200, according to the Halifax.
During the 11 years Thatcher was Prime Minister the proportion of people who were homeowners rose from 55 per cent to 66 per cent, while more than a million council tenants took advantage of the Right to Buy Scheme to buy their home.
London saw the most spectacular gains, with prices rising by 304 per cent to £100,300, although this was a rise of just 73 per cent once the impact of inflation was taken into account.
Property in East Anglia also performed strongly, rising by 291 per cent to £66,900 and in the South East prices gained 270 per cent to reach £88,900.
Homeowners in all regions of the country saw the value of their home jump by at least 250 per cent, except for people in Northern Ireland and Scotland, where prices rose by just 81 per cent and 183 per cent respectively.
