JENNIFER DAVIS marked herself out from the crowd when she set up her online travel agency, Holiday Rooms Direct, at the age of just 23.
Fours years on, her company has become Britain’s fastest-growing private technology business.
Holiday Rooms Direct has capitalised on the British public’s growing enthusiasm for bypassing the travel agent and booking holidays direct.
Sales have soared 514% a year, from £155,000 in 2004 to £6.9m in 2006, propelling the company to the No 1 spot in this year’s Sunday Times Microsoft Tech Track 100.
The annual league table, now in its seventh year, ranks Britain’s fastest-growing private technology companies by sales.
It is compiled by Oxford-based Fast Track and is published today as a separate supplement.
Nine businesses in this year’s Tech Track 100 were founded by women.
They include Natalie Massenet’s online fashion boutique Net-a-porter.com, and Box Telematics, set up by June Rey-nolds-Lacey in 2000, whose wireless technology is used by pub chains to monitor drinks consumption and the temperature of beer.
Four gaming companies made the top 100, including online bingo operator Gamesys and King.com.
In all, 42 companies on the table have obtained venture-capital funding, including DVD website Lovefilm and Ocado, the Waitrose home-delivery service.
