DR ANDREW SENTANCE is Chief Economist and Head of Environmental Affairs at British Airways plc. As Chief Economist, he advises BA on global economic developments, corporate strategy and regulatory issues. He was one of the five senior managers appointed by Rod Eddington in 2001 to prepare the company’s "Future Size and Shape" turnaround plan which restored BA’s profitability after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Since 2002 he has also been responsible for developing BA environmental and corporate responsibility policies.
He joined BA in January 1998 from London Business School, where he was Director of the Centre for Economic Forecasting. Previous positions held include Head of Economic Policy (1986-88) and Director of Economic Affairs (1989-93) at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).
Dr Sentance was a founder member of the Treasury’s Panel of Independent Forecasters (formerly known as the seven "wise men"), which provided advice to the Chancellor of the Exchequer under the last Government. He has also acted as a government adviser on official statistics and corporate social responsibility.
He was educated at Eltham College, Cambridge University (Clare College), and the London School of Economics, where he gained his PhD.
Dr Sentance holds visiting professorships at Royal Holloway, University of London, and Cranfield University and is a former Chairman of the Society of Business Economists. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a member of the Advisory Board of the Air Transport Action Group.
He is a trustee of the two main BA pension funds and chairs the pension fund investment committee. He is also a trustee of the Anglo-German Foundation and of Harvest Help - a development charity.
He is an established commentator on economic issues, environmental policy and the aviation industry and is the author of numerous articles and reports.
