Factory gate inflation hit double digits for the first time since comparable records began and manufacturers' costs jumped by a record 30 per cent in the year to June, official data showed this morning.
The Office for National Statistics said that unadjusted output prices rose 0.9 per cent between May and June, taking the annual rate of increase of goods leaving Britain’s factories up to 10 per cent - the highest rate since 1986.
Input prices rose a seasonally adjusted 2.1 per cent, taking the annual rate up to 30 per cent - also the highest since the series began in 1986 as food and fuel prices rocketed.
The figures will do little to assuage Bank of England policymakers' fears over rising inflation even as the economy slows. Data tomorrow is likely to show another rise in consumer price inflation, already running at the highest rate in more than a decade.
Howard Archer, of Global Insight, the economic consultancy, said that the gloomy data would likely prevent further rate cuts to shore up flagging economic growth for the forseeable future. "Ongoing elevated inflationary pressures continue to constrain the Bank of England's ability to deliver any time soon the interest rate cuts that the economy so badly needs," he said.
The only bright spot for the central bank in June's producer prices data was a smaller than expected rise in core output prices on the month - up 0.3 per cent - the smallest rise since November 2007. Analysts had expected a rise of 0.8 per cent.
The ONS said this was because scrap metal prices had remained broadly steady after surging higher in previous months.
However, the annual rate of core output price inflation jumped to 6.3 per cent - the fastest since April 1982. 890

Two answers to this: firstly get a grip on the rip-off energy market - electricity and gas resellers are stitching us up. secondly, reduce the excessive business rates. These two burdens are driving prices up and manufacturers out (of business and the country).
MarkS, Leeds,
It is obvious to anyone who thinks, that savers and people who spend wisely are the curse of the high street and banks.
It is only due to people borrowing and spending on big cost items that businesses survive.
To get borrrowing on the move again is vital for the government. Crazy but true!
