Marting Waller: City Diary
Attend an evening with Andre Agassi
From Wall Street comes the unedifying story of the man who was forced to resign after being cyber-stalked by the former husband of his former lover. When Steven Rattner quit last week as managing director of DLJ Merchant Banking, Credit Suisse's private equity unit, those in the know had a pretty good idea why, but the rest were none the wiser. Now The New York Times has gone with the story.
Rattner - no relation to a more prominent financier of the same name who runs Michael Bloomberg's blind trust - had an affair five years ago but is now back with his wife and family.
The woman's former husband decided to get his revenge after the marriage had ended by sending lurid e-mails to Rattner's colleagues, clients and reporters and posting on websites. Rattner had not contravened Credit Suisse's ethical code, as the woman did not work for the bank. But he could do nothing to stop his reputation being shredded.
“I feel like the star of a bad made-for-TV movie,” he said.

Boris flies into row on City airport expansion
Boris Johnson has weighed into the row over plans by London City airport to expand the number of flights there by half, to 120,000 a year, which is being opposed by some local residents.
The expansion had been expected to be nodded through by Newham Council, but the London Mayor wrote a surprise letter requesting a delay to any decision. Mr Johnson makes clear that he supports the airport - his predecessor, Ken Livingstone, thinks it should not survive the coming of Crossrail - but thinks that anything beyond 120,000 could be “extremely difficult to justify”.
Meanwhile, he is worried about the effect on the Thames Gateway Bridge, on to whose proposed site an expanded London City would impinge, and wants to wait for further studies. This is curious, because when last I looked, the bridge itself seemed doomed. But I am told it will be the subject of another planning inquiry next year.

Jimmy Cayne, 74-year-old former chief executive of Bear Stearns, nearly died last September, he reveals to Fortune magazine, from sepsis after a prostate infection. Perhaps this put into its proper context the £1 billion he lost when the shares collapsed. “I felt nothing. You got a bad grade on your test. That's it. No appeal.”

Full marks to the City PR firm M Communications, whose Christmas card has just arrived. It is either a touch tardy or very early. Or it might be the fault of the Royal Mail, to go by the date on the envelope, I suppose. Though it goes against the grain to be fair to City PR firms.

A personal plea. I have known Nick Bealer, City nickname “The Vicar”, for years, though not the 30 he has just notched up in the City. Now at broker Alexander David, he is tracking down old colleagues for a party but is drawing a bit of a blank at Wedd Durlacher Mordaunt, the huge jobber that gave him his first job. Anyone still out there?
