Arun Sarin: Leaving Vodafone on a high

With only two months to spare, Arun Sarin has finally done his deal. The chief executive of Vodafone, appointed in 2003, then failed to buy AT&T Wireless for $38 billion in cash. At the time he was perceived as weak, and an inadequate successor to Sir Christopher Gent - the man who built Vodafone from scratch.

He also came under pressure to sell the company's 45 per cent stake in Verizon, the second-biggest mobile phone company in America. Five years on, Sarin has proved he was right to stick to his guns. Yesterday Verizon acquired the smaller rival Alltel for $28.1 billion, in the deal that puts Vodafone in top position in the rapidly expanding US mobile phone market. A good note to bow out on, then.
