Miners need iron fist

The imminent induction of Eurasian Natural Resources (ENRC), the Kazakh iron ore miner, into the FTSE 100 club of London-listed blue chips is in danger of turning into a Borat-style comedy. Going by yesterday's spat, it will take more than the appointment of City grandees to establish its credibility.

ENRC and its potential takeover target Kazakhmys, another FTSE 100 stock, can't even agree whether they have held takeover talks. These are huge companies. Even allowing for the small free float, what happens to them matters more to British investors than what happens at, say, British Airways. Time for the Takeover Panel to restore order.
