Change of tune at Vodafone

What should Vodafone shareholders get Arun Sarin for Christmas? Perhaps a recording of Sir Christopher Gent, the former chief executive and, by all accounts, one-time enthusiast for Mr Sarin’s exit, singing Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word. Vodafone has not been the best investment of the century, but Mr Sarin has answered his critics. The share price is up from 138p in March 2006, when the in-fighting broke out, to yesterday’s close of 195p. He has laid out a clear strategy. He has begun to show a return on 3G investments, albeit an asymmetric one. And he has been vindicated in holding on to the stake in Verizon Wireless. Another gift idea: an investor chorus, led by Sir John Bond, of Please Don’t Go.
