Slicker cities

For all of London’s rivalry with New York, the battle for supremacy is not the only story among the world’s financial capitals. Even as the City and Wall Street, have swollen, a new generation of business capitals has emerged. This is an an era not only of consolidation in the world’s big business cities, but also of diversification.

Dubai is the most obvious example of how governments with both the ambition and resources can build global commercial hubs from the ground up. Madras, a city of faded glory, has been revived by technology and trade. As the profile of the city in our series on the world’s new business capitals notes, Tata Consultancy Services alone employs 22,000 people there. The world is not flat. The countryside is. The cities are rising ever higher.
