25: The Police

Fancy being a real life PC Plod? You may not get to do much plodding, as the challenges for today’s police forces are formidable. Counter-terrorism, the war on drugs, gun crime and anti-social behaviour orders are just some of the challenges for today's officers. There are some 10,000 vacancies for new police officers annually and the route into the service is the same for graduates as non-graduates — everyone begins as a probationary constable. This two-year programme includes up to 18 weeks of intensive training in core police skills, extensive patrol experience and further on-the-job development. Don't fancy starring in your own version of The Bill? Civilian positions in areas such as marketing, HR, forensic science, legal services, IT and finance are also available.
