Having decided which schools to target, it is time to deepen the self-analysis and to formally consider your abilities, preferences and experiences by drawing up your profile. Last week we looked at constructing your personal profile, this week we look at your professional profile.
To write your professional profile take a sheet of paper and draw two vertical lines down the page, dividing the paper into three columns. Across the top, label the columns: features and attri-butes; stories; and analysis. Down the side label the rows: characteristics and qualities; activities; accomplishments; skills and strengths; difficulties and failures; weaknesses and inexperience; leadership; in- fluences; change and growth experiences; difference and diversity in the workplace; values and philosophy; and goals.
Then complete the table. Start with the characteristics and qualities row: under the heading “features and attributes” list your professional characteristics and qualities. To do this ask yourself some key questions, such as: What words do you or others use to describe yourself at work? What are you like in the office? Are you good in groups? Are you a patient planner or a “do-and-see” type? Do you promote change or stability?
Under the heading “stories”, note anecdotes that demonstrate the professional qualities that you claim. Ask what events in the workplace have led you to develop your professional dispensation? What occurrences demonstrate your valuable attri-butes? Finally, under “analysis”, ask yourself whether your attributes are concentrated in certain areas? What are the implications of this? Why are your professional characteristics and qualities the ones you adopt in work situations?
Once you’ve done this brainstorming thoroughly for all the rows, select the information you need to build a clear profile with a definitive message and clear themes; map your message on to the application questions; and plan, write and edit your MBA application essays.
