“I did a degree in Swedish and European literature, and a postgraduate journalism course. I worked for a number of publications before joining The Sun. It was fantastic to reach so many people, but I realised that men, especially older men, were not getting enough health press. I wanted to change that. The Sun couldn’t publish men’s health articles every day so I moved to the Prostate Cancer Charity.

“Prostate cancer is difficult to raise awareness about and it has been a real challenge — but the message is starting to get through. I’ve always been enthusiastic about my work, but here, anything I do feels as if it will make a difference to someone. I feel less part of the rat race now. I earn less than I did before, but I have the privilege of working with a group of men who make me proud of what I do.

“When I speak to a man recently found to have terminal prostate cancer and who may have less than three years to live but wants to run the London Marathon to help to prevent others dying from the disease, it’s very humbling. Each day is different, sometimes frustrating, but motivation is never a problem.”
