Morrison Construction Flaxman Road, London SE5
Atmosphere: The canteen on our construction site is compact and often slightly crowded at peak times, namely morning tea and lunch. The atmosphere can be tense if there is no milk, or the bread is mouldy, or there are no mugs. However, it’s jovial and staff morale is improved when biscuits are available.
Worth queueing for: That first brew of the day on a chilly winter morning, or the in-date Pot Noodle. A loaf of bread can often be found alongside the milk and kettle so tea and toast before work is not out of the question.
On offer are a vast array of stained tea mugs and a fridge that at any point may contain delicacies such as economy margarine, a half-full tin of beans, peanut butter, tomato puree and Marmite – a challenge for any TV chef, I think you will agree.
Straight in the bin: Refrigerators do not run 24 hours a day, so milk left overnight often does not pass the “sniff-test”. Apart from this, anything else left unattended is usually consumed. What this place really needs is: A woman’s touch. Plus two hours of industrial cleaning and someone who can actually cook. The plastic tables and fixed plastic chairs provide a less-than-comfortable dining experience for our bigger members of staff.
Tried and tested: Tea and toast, 89p for a loaf (can satisfy the whole canteen in one sitting); soup, £1; bacon sandwich, £1.50 (a premium product).
