Atmosphere: not so much a canteen, as a chilled, corporate hang-out with white contemporary furniture and black-clad staff.
Worth queuing for: the legion of lawyers at Norton Rose - banned from eating hot food at their desks to stop smells wafting - can take their pick from: roast tomato or Jerusalem artichoke soup and fresh bread; smoked salmon, pork kebabs or stuffed tomatoes from the “protein bar” with a selection of salads; fragrant Thai curries or lamb tagine with cous-cous.
So far so healthy, but you can also pig out at the rotisserie or grab a slice of homemade pizza or a juicy mince and onion pie, just 90p.
Traditionalists will go straight for warm treacle tart and custard. Help yourself for 90p.
Straight in the bin: steer clear of the dessert counter if you don’t want to pile on the pounds. The mini cheesecakes, tarts and the like are too tempting at two for £1.20 (or 70p each).
What this place really needs: is the chicken from Sussex or Thailand? Is it free-range or organic? Information on the provenance of the food is all that’s lacking.
Tried and tested: sweet potato, butterbean and cashew nut curry with steamed rice, yoghurt and mint sauce, mango pickle and naan bread; tangy lemon tart; bottle of sparkling water, all for £4.90
Norton Rose, 3 More Riverside, London SE1
