Think banks and cowboys and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid spring to mind. Hopelessly romantic though that may be, it is not far removed from the long and often epic history of American Express. The financial company started out as a courier service in 1850, when its employees delivered packages on horseback from America’s eastern cities to the wild western frontier. Today, it is a worldwide brand synonymous with travel and credit cards.

Staff are proud to work here, giving Amex a 72% positive score and believe in its principles (78%), which run the gamut from good citizenship to accountability. Training is flexible and people seem happy with the system; the 73% score for good personal growth ranks the firm 10th, with the score for helpful training slightly lower at 69%.
