Edward Jones: Best for leadership
Sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development
The number of people heading financial services companies who could claim an award for outstanding leadership are a select group indeed. An endangered species, even. But Tim Kirley, chief executive of Edward Jones, manages the feat. Employees of this global financial company, which focuses on helping individual investors through its network of branches, appreciate Kirley’s efforts in these difficult times, giving him a top three positive score of 86% for being an inspiration to them.
Kirley joined the company in the US in 1982 and in 1997 moved to London to launch Edward Jones in the UK. Working with his senior colleagues and team members in an open-plan office, he is always approachable. If they don’t talk to him on a day-to-day basis, employees have a chance to let Kirley know their opinions by completing staff surveys.
Regular meetings are held to celebrate achievements, reinforce the firm’s culture, and to allow Kirley and his team to address important issues.
Employees believe Kirley runs the organisation based on sound moral principles, with a score of 93% beating every other company. They are excited about the firm’s future (87%).
The economic downturn means Kirley and managing partner Jim Weddle now consider frequent and clear communication not just a priority but a necessity. People are kept in the loop through direct communication including letters, videos, talks and posts on the intranet.
If the belt is being tightened, staff are the first to be told why. “Many people out there are wondering what to do or aren’t being paid bonuses,” says one employee. “Yet Edward Jones is sending updates and communication to me to explain why my bonus is lower than usual. That’s very considerate and is appreciated.” A top score of 90% shows employees have a great deal of faith in Kirley.
