The success of the firm behind the Tesco loyalty card is built on knowing what individuals want and that includes its employees, who are very happy with the rewards and prospects the company offers. Founded in 1989 by husband-and-wife team Edwina Dunn and Clive Humby, Dunnhumby has shown how customer data can improve purchasing power for shoppers and profits for businesses. The London-based company analyses sales data to enable it to devise marketing strategies and campaigns. It has been credited with playing a massive part in Tesco’s transformation into Britain’s most popular supermarket and its expansion abroad.
Today Dunnhumby employs more than 800 people, including 522 in the UK, and has annual sales in excess of £150m worldwide. As well as its Tesco Clubcard work, the firm uses its know-how to help retailers such as Kroger in America and Casino in France to understand their customers.
An attractive benefits package for employees includes a bonus scheme, an annual “treat yourself” allowance of £315, a contributory pension scheme, a free on-site gym and funded nights out. Employees love working for this organisation, earning it a 75% positive score in our staff survey and are happy with the pay and perks (73%, ranking Dunnhumby 11th).
Money isn’t the only thing that workers appreciate. The global reach of the business, tailored training and stretching assignments mean staff are excited about where the organisation is going (83%, a top five result) and think the experience they gain is valuable for their future (84%, the sixth highest score on this question). Personal reviews are held every six months and everyone has their own career manager.
Projects from across the organisation are showcased every two weeks and staff are encouraged to involve themselves in work beyond their direct remit, which makes work stimulating (78%) and good for personal growth (82%).
There are a large number of social events to show appreciation for hard work, ranging from salsa dancing and a scavenger hunt to the summer ball and the Christmas party. A 4pm finish every Friday also helps employees and their family feel valued and healthy (79%).
In addition to the annual skill development course, team days every quarter encourage a spirit of collaboration. When it comes to having fun and getting a buzz, Dunnhumby scores 81% and 70%.
The firm donates a portion of its profits to four charities and runs social events to raise money for them, yet employees feel it could do more for the community, giving it just a 49% positive score. That doesn’t, though, stop staff feeling proud to work here (82%).
