Working hard and playing hard is a match made in heaven, according to the Office Angels workforce. Its 615 employees love working for the Hertfordshire-based recruitment consultancy, giving a top positive score of 87% in our survey.
Every December Office Angels staff polish their halos and get into their glad rags for the company’s Oscar-style awards ceremony.
Last year top-performing recruitment consultants, managers and administration staff were presented with holiday vouchers and team efforts were rewarded with trips to Mauritius and Marbella.
This young workforce (most employees are 34 or under) love spending time together. Team relationships at Office Angels are stronger than at any other Best Company, with a top result of 86% for questions about My Team. Colleagues go out of their way to help each other (83%) and feel a strong sense of family (86%, another best score).
Weekend spa breaks, club nights, quizzes and meals at exclusive restaurants reward hard work. A 91% score shows teams are fun to work with and working with colleagues gives staff a buzz (83%), two more unbeaten scores.
An 80% overall score for questions about managers ranks the firm fourth on this factor and shows that the good working relationships aren’t restricted to team members.
Managers regularly express their appreciation for a job well done (81%) and talk openly and honestly to staff (83%).
Another top score of 85% shows that people feel managers care about them as individuals. Staff say managers share important information with them (82%, the third highest score).
Managing director David Clubb sends a weekly e-mail to everyone, and every week awards a bottle of champagne to the branch that has most clearly demonstrated the OA (Office Angels) factor — the best positive, make-it-happen attitude to help clients find a job. Clubb inspires his staff (82%) who feel that senior managers truly live the values of the organisation (84%, ranking the firm second on this statement).
One of the company’s values is accountability and there are opportunities for staff to give feedback and raise issues with senior managers. They can do this through the Heaven Knows area on the intranet, and there are also two staff satisfaction surveys every year.
Staff say senior managers listen to them (76%) and care about how happy they are in their job (80%). They are also confident in the leadership skills of the senior management team (86%).
Managers motivate staff to give their best every day (75%) and it is worth them being on top of their game, because pay is performance-related. Other benefits include the chance to buy shares, childcare vouchers, dental insurance, life assurance and a car allowance.
Flexible working includes career breaks. One consultant is spending four months doing charity work in India. Almost every staff member has helped a good cause during working hours and people don’t lose out financially. Clubb runs the organisation on sound moral principles, according to employees (80%).
