There’s a window onto the world at Digital Window, a commission-based online advertising agency, which has 850 clients including Boots and Vodafone.

The London-based firm, in 100th place last year, has 79 staff who say the broad experience they gain is valuable for the future (an 87% positive score).

There’s plenty to do but colleagues go out of their way to help, and managers are supportive too (both 83%). The company spent £107,000 on fun last year and has held its annual awayday in locations such as Paris, Amsterdam, Prague and Barcelona.

Smaller groups enjoyed outings to events such as the Brit awards, Glastonbury festival and the Foo Fighters performing at the O2 arena. People have a lot of fun with their teams (87%) and these social events forge a strong sense of family (81%). Colleagues also care for one another (87%).

Everyone has a flexible start and finish time around core business hours from 10am to 4pm. As a result, staff are happy with the balance of work and home life (73%) and say the job doesn’t interfere with other responsibilities (77%).

Fresh fruit is delivered twice a week, and there’s a break area where employees can play pool, air hockey or video arcade games appealing to this digitally literate team with an average age of 28. Those with families are covered, too, with AXA healthcare for staff and their dependents.

People don’t suffer work-related stress with all of these benefits (79%), and say there isn’t too much pressure to perform well (75%). Even so, they can make a valuable contribution to the company’s success (84%).

Account managers typically earn £29,500, and every six months a fixed percentage of company profits is divided between staff in proportion to salary. The firm has given employees a stake in the business, with the last round of share options in 2007, so if the private company floats or is sold staff will benefit financially.

Digital Window aims to recruit from within and “grow” its own talent. Staff say jobs are good for personal growth (85%), while there are external training courses from companies such as Reed Learning, Adobe and the Institute of Direct Marketing. Managers are excellent role models as a result (76%).

Although many clients are in the retail sector and have been affected by the economic climate, the firm says that online spending is still growing. It has a positive outlook, and staff are excited about where the company is going (81%).
