The 355 employees on the two sites are encouraged to contribute towards the marketing of Honda, not just their sales. Therefore, as one of the world’s largest manufacturers of cars, motorcycles and power equipment, members of staff, regardless of their role, are invited to help out at motor shows or boat shows. This results in almost 81% of staff believing they can make a valuable contribution to the success of the company, and 86% are proud to work for Honda UK, a rate bettered in just four other companies in our top 100.
The typical Honda job of area sales development manager essentially extends links with franchise dealerships, through whom its jet skis, roadhog motorbikes and other Honda products are sold.
Staff are strongly encouraged to move across the business and are offered secondments of three, six or 12 months to other departments. There is a strong benefits package for all employees at any level. Everybody is entitled to between 25 and 30 days of annual leave, a profit-related pay scheme, life insurance and private healthcare after six months’ service. Everyone has free gym membership. Honda contributes 11.25% of salaries into a contributory pension scheme.
Staff pride in working for Honda is closely connected with the company’s products — no surprise, given they can road-, water- or lawn-test anything to their hearts’ content. ATVs (all-terrain vehicles), powerboats, ride-on mowers and Fireblade motorcycles are the numerous vehicles of choice for employees at the weekend.
But the firm is aware of its responsibilities to the environment. Five “Honda woods” were set up in September, where a tree is planted for every new or used vehicle sold. Only three companies gain a higher score from their staff than Honda’s 82% for protecting the environment.
