Treating people with dignity and respect is the central tenet at Sandwell Community Caring Trust (SCCT) — for staff and service users alike. Employees provide personal care services to profoundly disabled people and the elderly. It’s logical to assume that if they receive sympathetic treatment from their employer they are more likely to accord the same care to the people they look after.
The trust offers a range of services at locations across the Black Country including supported living, residential, respite and daycare for adults and children with physical and learning disabilities, as well as residential and daycare for the elderly. Helping disadvantaged people is what gets the staff of SCCT up in the morning, and they know their work contributes towards the organisation making a positive difference to the world — this point scored 85% positive in our employee survey, ranking it third.
But it’s not only working for the greater good of others that drives staff at SCCT — personal ambition also runs high. Employees think the experience they gain from their job is valuable for their future, rating this question 85% positive (the third highest score), and they find the training they receive beneficial to them personally (84% — the highest score of any organisation).
This will please chief executive Geoff Walker, who believes the trust’s passionate approach to making sure people feel valued reaps financial dividends and leads to high-quality services.
While the salary of a care assistant might not light the fire of a corporate lawyer or an investment banker, staff here are more content with what they earn than most, giving the question that asks if they are happy with their pay and benefits a 79% positive score, the fourth best in the survey.
Stress levels are low and people are happy with their work/life balance. Work not interfering with responsibilities at home rated an 85% positive response, another top score.
What is clear from our survey is that employees are proud to work for the organisation (85%), would strongly recommend working for it to others (88%) and would not leave for another job (84%).
