As a mutual organisation the company is owned by its customers rather than shareholders. Staff find working for a firm with a conscience rewarding; they think it is run on strong values (78%) and believe in those values (85%), while chief executive Philip Williamson is felt to administer Nationwide on sound moral principles (76%).
Nearly a third of employees have more than 15 years’ service and a wide range of practices ensures they remain engaged. Senior management try to be accessible, with talkback events held at the Swindon and Northampton administration centres, while intranet feedback to staff questions is returned within 24 hours. All individual areas of the business have a fixed budget of 0.5% of their salary bill to spend on awards and this contributes to an environment where the 16,000-strong workforce feel their contribution is valuable (76% positive score) and that they make a difference (74%).
Flexible working can be requested by anyone and more than 5,000 employees work reduced hours, while a number job share, work from home or have term time-only contracts. Staff can take a career break of up to six months during which time they continue to receive all benefits — except pay, of course. New mums get at least 26 weeks off with 10 weeks at full pay, while new dads have a fortnight off with full pay.
Employees can choose to retire at any time between 50 and 75. Everyone should have a decent pension to look forward to, as the company pays 23.8% of salary into a scheme, with staff contributing 5%.
Joanna Thomas, who works at the Malvern branch, says: “Nationwide was a good employer when I joined over 22 years ago, and it’s getting better and better. I benefit from free private family healthcare, a concessionary mortgage, supercheques at Christmas, a quarterly reward and a long holiday entitlement — why would I want to work anywhere else?”
