The mutual society strives to be a good neighbour in its 50 branches throughout the West Midlands and demonstrates its support for local causes by allowing staff to work for community projects and charities during office hours. It scores 11th highest in our survey for putting something back.
Many of the staff have worked for the society for more than 10 years, earning long-service awards as well as thank-you letters and small gifts along the way.
Although the wages are not flash, job satisfaction is high and staff feel they are part of the West Brom’s family. Andrew Messenger, the chief executive, is popular and approachable: 85% think he is full of positive energy. Our survey also shows that 77% of employees believe they can contribute to the success of the organisation.
Holiday entitlement starts at a minimum of 25 days. A final salary pension scheme has been replaced with a contributory one into which the society pays up to 7% of salary. Staff mortgages are discounted below the base rate, and workers are also allowed discounts on insurance.
Free financial and legal services are available and any workers who are feeling under the weather benefit from free counselling, stress management and occupational health services. Those who use public transport can join the society’s discounted travel scheme.
