Each person who takes the ethics survey is sent an ethical DNA profile and assigned a moral type. There are six moral types, depending on the balance of the respondant’s scores for principled conscience, social conscience and rule compliance:
Philosopher About 15 per cent of adults are philosophers. Their moral DNA type is ranked in order of importance as: principled conscience, social conscience and rule compliance (PSR). They believe that moral principle is the most important ethical perspective. Philosophers are good at solving difficult or complex dilemmas, but will break the rules if they believe a higher principle is at stake. Those most likely to have this profile include: Australians, postgraduates, consultants and Jewish people
Angel About 16 per cent of adults are angels. Their moral DNA type is ranked in order of importance as: social conscience, principled conscience and rule compliance (SPR). Angels believe that being good to others is the most important moral perspective. They will break the rules if they believe a higher principle is at stake. They may give people the benefit of the doubt rather than stand up for a principle. Those most likely to have this, typically female, profile include: Britons, those in the media and local government and those with left-wing political views
Enforcer About 14 per cent of adults are enforcers. Their moral DNA type is ranked in order of importance as: rules compliance, principled conscience and social conscience (RPS). Enforcers are the people we rely on to make sure that everyone obeys the rules. However, they may seem to lack empathy for others. Those most likely to have this, typically male, profile include: those in the Armed Services, Muslims and those with moderate political views
Judge About 17 per cent of adults are judges. Their moral DNA type is ranked in order of importance as: principled conscience, rules compliance and social conscience (PRS). Like philosophers, judges believe that moral principle is the most important ethical perspective. They tend to be good at solving really challenging dilemmas, but could lack empathy with others. Those most likely to have this profile include: Americans, those working in central government and those with right-of-centre political views
Teacher About 20 per cent of adults are teachers. Their moral DNA type is ranked in order of importance as: social conscience, rules compliance and principled conscience (SRP). Teachers believe that doing what’s right for humanity is the right thing to do, although they may decide to break the rules if they think they know what is best. Those most likely to have this profile include: teachers, health professionals and Buddhists
Guardian About 17 per cent of adults are guardians. Their moral DNA type is ranked in order of importance as: rules compliance, social conscience and principled conscience (RSP). Guardians believe that doing as we are told and following the letter of the law is best for all of us. They may fail to consider important principles, such as freedom and trust. Those most likely to have this profile include: those aged under 35, Christians and those with no political affiliation
