Some internet tips for easier information management. There are several Windows-based web browsers, including Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE). IE Version 6 seems to be the most commonly used in organisations, so that’s the one used for these tips and hints.
Top search engines. Despite the fact that Yahoo and Google seem to dominate the market, if you can’t find relevant information try the third most popular search engine, Ask.com (www.uk.ask.com).
The top three meta-search engines are www.dogpile.com, www.copernic.com and www.clusty.com. They allow you to search across a variety of individual search engines such as Google and Yahoo, instead of trawling separately.
Favorites. To arrange them in alphabetical order, click on Favorites then right click anywhere within the list and pick Sort By Name from the dropdown menu.
Links bar — a series of your most used websites in a toolbar (just below the main toolbar). First, organise your “favorites” and copy the most used to the Links folder in Favorites. To add the Links bar, go to View/Toolbars and click on Links.
Folders icon — allows you to see your desktop folder list in the same window as the web. To add it, right click on the main toolbar, pick Customise and click on Folder in the Available Toolbar button, then click on Add and click close.
Resize the font. There are three ways. Press F11, which will increase the size by one step. Add the Size icon to your Toolbar; this allows for a range of different font sizes. From the View menu, pick Text Size.
Top three shortcut keys:
Alt+Home to go to your home page
Ctrl+F to search for text on the selected page and to add the current
page
Alt+A to go to your Favorites.
Use toolbars that come with search engines, such as the Google and Yahoo toolbars.
Delete all temporary internet files regularly, as these can slow down your PC. Go to Tools/ Internet Options, then click sequentially on the buttons marked Delete Cookies and Delete Files.
