L’Oréal, 255 Hammersmith Road, London
Atmosphere: Sleek modern layout with a mixture of long, canteen-style tables, smaller round tables and a lounge area for coffees. It’s the perfect place for a working lunch, a gossip with colleagues and a spot of people-watching — this is a beauty company, after all.
Worth queueing for: Mornings at the coffee and breakfast bar are busy, with fair-trade lattes, cappuccinos and mint teas being snapped up for a mere 35p. Favourites at lunchtime include the weekly roast on a Thursday, chicken curry, vegetable tagine, hot tuna nicoise salad and tasty pasta and rice dishes, all priced between £2 and £3. Those wanting a lighter option have the choice of a well stocked salad bar, a selection of starters and protein dishes such as goat’s cheese, roquette and caramelised onion (£1.65), seafood sushi with wasabi and rice wine vinegar (£1.75) or daily home-made soups.
Straight in the bin: Giant Byron Bay cookies (95p) — especially the triple choc fudge ones. These are just far too tempting when faced with a mid-morning hunger pang.
What this place really needs is: The coffee bar is about to start serving hot porridge for breakfast, so it looks like goodbye to the triple choc cookies and the mid-morning hunger pangs.
Tried and tested: Prawn, mango and chilli salad (£1.75); chilli con carne with soured cream, guacamole and tortilla chips (£2.30); and tiramisu (£1).
